America has a weird relationship with coming of age, and when actual adulthood begins, and a citizen may start making their own decisions. For years, I was flabbergasted that you had to be 25 years old to rent a car. Wait a freakin’ minute! I can volunteer for the U.S. Army at seventeen, go to a foreign land and blow shit up, but I can’t rent a car? Are you being serious? Yes, yes, they were. You literally were banned by corporate insurance policies from renting an automobile after having six years in the military (18 to 24) and were a junior NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) in the United States Military. I am responsible for being in charge of an Army enlisted team, but I am not responsible enough to rent a car to drive to Santa Barbara this weekend. That’s actually happened…
My father signed the Army enlistment forms that were required to allow me to enter the Inactive Reserve Program in 1983, six months before I turned 18 years old, yet it would be illegal for me to consume even a near beer without facing citation and/or arrest. I officially joined the Army in August 1983, but I could not vote for another six months. I could not order a beer (never mind hard liquor) at a bar for another eighteen months (when the drinking age was 19). I could not order a glass of vodka or scotch for another couple of years. I could sign a government contract to literally volunteer to get killed in a foreign war and get sent home in a plastic bag, but I could not sign a business contract or buy a home.
Like when the teetotalers demanded to raise the drinking age nationwide to 21 when the motivation was not necessarily social harm, but moral panic and pearl-clutching. Li’l Suzie, the pure angel of Suburbia, may have a few rum and Cokes on Friday night and may want to have…insert horror movie screaming here…sex, gasp, because she was intoxicated. Maybe she was just horny. Maybe a good drunken fuck is a good cure for what ails you. Today, it is not good enough that the drinking age is 21 universally; they now want the DUI limits lowered below the studied and scientifically determined level. Why? Social harm? No, moral panic and pearl-clutching and Prohibition thinking recycled by people who still want to be the high school class president at 44 years old. You know, HOA board members.
Remember, the Prohibition was about making sure the deplorables (Blacks, Mexicans, the Irish, and Italians…) did not have legal access to ethanol. Wealthy people at the Harvard Club could have as much alcohol as they could possibly consume. Ethanol is bad for the bad people; it is fine for the elites.
Don’t even get me started with the age of consent when it comes to sexual contact. What da fuck are we thinking?!? We have a hard limit set on the drinking age (or cannabis consumption age), but the age of consent is all over the fucking place. Can a 16-year-old girl consent to sex? Maybe. Depending on the state and the circumstance, and the age of the potential offender. Child brides?? America loves its child brides, especially in Mississippi, home of the concern of crime and groomers, which has no legal limits for the age of a child bride. In West Virginia, if you knock up a teenager, that is an excuse to marry her, not charge the degenerate with statutory rape.

Can a child bride file for divorce?? In many states, no, they are too young to initiate a legal proceeding. They are old enough to enter the contract of marriage, but not old enough to escape an abusive marriage - it is a trap.

Speaking of politicized American religious hypocrites, they love complaining about Sharia Law and child marriage and abuse in the Muslim world (that is very real), but absolve themselves of any wrongdoing or ethical or moral failures when they permit similar conduct under the guise of their religion.

It makes my skin crawl that only 10 states had the guts to stop (the mostly religious) perverted degenerates from taking children hostage in a sham marriage that is really just criminal behavior.
The abuse at the hands of Maxwell, Epstein, and everyone on the infamous Epstein List should be seen as horrific by any observer. But don’t lose sight of the lion’s share of the child abuse problem: child brides.
We would have a lot fewer problems if we could just determine a child from an adult, but historically, across many issues, we refuse to make that legal call. Why? Postscript #1 — Yes, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of my all-time favorite movies. I own it on Fandango and just watched it again while making dinner a couple of weekends ago. To tangent to cinematography for a moment: Go back and watch a good copy (Blu-ray preferably) of that movie. The color and exposures, especially in the actor’s skin tones, are wonderful. Now go watch a newer digitally-filmed movie and ask yourself where did all that great natural color and gamma went?
Postscript #2 — Yes, of course. I fully understand, being a retired cop and all, that non-religious pedos exist. They do. Postscript #4 - Mrs. NutBallCop here… This is an issue that shockingly gets very little attention. It’s not just a matter of “pick a lane, for crying out loud!” about the age of majority. It’s that conflicting standards that affect - and possibly trap - real people in situations and take away their autonomy to make their own decisions. In the case of legal loopholes and limbo regarding child brides, the ones that pay the very high price of abuse and marital prison are not the grown men, but their “brides” - you know, children. Children.
